A label mark sensor (also called a label gap sensor or fork sensor) is a photoelectric sensor that straddles the label web on a labelling machine and detects the change in translucency at each label edge, so the applicator knows exactly when one label ends and the next begins. The HYPSEN HFS03-60LAB-M84 is a metal-bodied fork sensor with a 3 mm × 60 mm slot and a self-teach function.

A fork-type photoelectric label sensor for labelling and packaging machines. The label web runs through the 3 mm slot; the sensor sees the change in translucency at each label edge and outputs a pulse, so the applicator knows exactly where one label ends and the next begins. It self-teaches: run a short length of web through, press teach, and it sets its own threshold — no potentiometer hunting when you change label stock. Light-on and dark-on are both selectable, and the same 4-pin M8 connector carries NPN and PNP outputs, so it drops into most existing controllers without rewiring the input card. The 60 mm slot depth clears wide webs, and the metal housing survives the knocks that plastic fork sensors do not.

Frequently asked questions

How does a label gap sensor work?

The label web runs through the fork slot. The emitter shines through the backing paper; where a label is present the web is less translucent, so the receiver sees less light. The sensor converts that step change into a digital pulse at each label edge, which the applicator uses to time label dispensing.

Do I need to adjust it when I change label stock?

No potentiometer hunting is needed. Run a short length of the new web through the slot and press the teach button; the sensor measures the label and gap levels and sets its own threshold.

Is the output NPN or PNP?

Both. Pin 4 (black) is the NPN output and pin 2 (white) is the PNP output, on the same 4-pin M8 connector. Use whichever matches your input card and leave the other unconnected.

Will it detect clear or semi-transparent labels?

Yes, semi-transparent labels are supported — this is the main reason to use a teach-in sensor rather than a fixed-threshold one. Fully clear labels on clear liner are the hardest case; teach on the actual stock and verify before running production.

What is the slot size?

The fork opening is 3 mm wide and 60 mm deep, so it clears webs up to 60 mm into the throat and tolerates the flutter of a 3 mm thick path.

What supply voltage does it need?

12–24 V DC, with a maximum switched load of 100 mA. Pin 1 (brown) is positive and pin 3 (blue) is negative.
